Curriculum and Assessment

Introduction

At Sessay CE Primary School we are committed to ensuring that all children achieve success during their time with us. We believe that offering a wide range of experiences linked to curriculum themes is key to achieving this.

Vision statement for the curriculum

During their time in our school all children will have the opportunity to:

• Take part in educational visits and/or in-school workshops
• Plant and grow a flower or vegetable
• Bake or cook a variety of foods
• Make their own book every year
• Visit a theatre, a museum, an art gallery and a place of worship
• Travel on a bus, a train and a boat
• Visit the seaside, a river, the countryside, a farm, woodlands, a city, a town and a village
• Work on a project to improve the school environment
• Take part in an adventure activity
• Play outdoors in order to appreciate seasonal change
• Take part in competitive sports
• Spend a night away from home
• Take part in a musical or dramatic performance

We plan a curriculum that emphasises the basic skills of literacy (reading and writing), maths and ICT (using technology) which is interesting and relevant to the children.

Curriculum 2014

As of September 2014 the Government have introduced a new National Curriculum. At Sessay CE Primary School we have introduced a new curriculum which incorporates the new National Curriculum. Our themes are designed so that classes can work more collaboratively together and so for many of the subjects they run on a two year cycle where pairs of classes work together on a theme. Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural learning is woven through the curriculum with an emphasis on British Values. School visits and visitors into school are important to us to enrich the curriculum and so there will be a number of these during the year. Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 will also take part in a residential visit on alternate years.

We have just reviewed our long term plans so that classes will be working on similar topics.

Reading

In Reception we will teach your child to read using phonics. This is where the children learn the sounds each letter makes and blend these together to make words. In school we use 'Letters and Sounds' as the basis of the progression of sounds we teach. We use 'Jolly Phonics' to teach the children actions that link to the sounds. This makes learning the sound easier for the children. We will send home reading books right from the start of Reception for you to read with your child. We use a range of different reading scheme books. These reading books are divided into bands of similar difficulty and the children can choose books from within a particular colour band. The teacher will move them to a harder colour band when they think they are ready. The children will move up through the colour bands until they are a very able reader. At this point they will then have free choice of a range of reading books in the KS2 library. Children from Y1 upwards will also have the opportunity to take a library book home each week from our school library.

Assessment

The Government has made changes to how your child’s progress and attainment is assessed and this is to tie in with the New Curriculum which was introduced in 2014 for some year groups and for all year groups in September 2015. Here are the key changes and information on how your child’s progress and attainment will be tracked at Sesasay CE Primary School.

What has changed?

The DfE announced last year that there would no longer be National Curriculum levels and schools would be allowed to set up their own way of assessing pupils. The DfE did this as they wanted to avoid what has been termed ‘The Level Race’ where children were moved through the old National Curriculum levels quickly to achieve higher attainment. The old national curriculum was subdivided into levels but these were not linked to their national curriculum year group.

What is new?

The new national curriculum has more content and is pitched higher. The old ‘levels’ will no longer be used and the curriculum now gives Age Related Expectations for each year group. Bands will replace levels to reference attainment with each bands relating to each year group.

How we will assess at Sessay CE Primary School

Here are the new ‘bands’ we will be working with.

Children will be recorded on the system using the following key against Age Related Expectations:

 

B – Below (the age range the children are working in is recorded)

B – Beginning

W1 – Working towards achieving 25% of objectives

W2 – Working towards achieving 50% of objectives

W3 – Working towards achieving 75% of objectives

A – At achieving 95-100% of objectives

M – Mastery using the objectives in a range of ways to show in-depth understanding

E – Exceeding and dipping into the next year’s objectives

 

NB

Very few children will be exceeding by the end of the year as mastery takes many forms

The majority of children will start each year as ‘Beginning’ as new objectives are introduced

 

Under the old levels system children who were exceeding age related expectations may have moved into the next curriculum level. The DfE now want children who are in the mastering bracket to add more depth and breadth to their knowledge, and to have more opportunities to develop their using and applying skills and apply what they have learnt to a wide range of curriculum areas and problem solving situations. This is to ensure that children have a greater depth of knowledge. Guidance suggests that children should not be accelerated onto the following year’s Age Related Expectations unless under exceptional circumstances.

Religious Education and Collective Worship

 

As a Church of England school we comply fully with the statutory requirement to include RE in the curriculum and provide a daily act of collective worship of a broadly Christian nature for children in Key Stages 1 & 2. We follow the North Yorkshire agreed syllabus for RE and place an emphasis on the practical application of Christian values to daily life and decision making. We recognise that many of our pupils may be of other faiths or no faith; however we believe that all pupils should have the opportunity to learn about the Christian faith and other major faiths which they will encounter in their lives, and have the opportunity to explore and reflect on values, spirituality, awe and wonder. Our RE curriculum links closely with the Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship curriculum (PSHCE).

 

Our daily act of Collective Worship follows an ongoing theme on Mon-Thur and includes a hymn or spiritual song; time for personal prayer and/or reflection; stories drawn from the Bible, other faiths and those written especially to illustrate aspects of spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. We welcome local clergy, lay workers and members of other churches to lead Collective Worship. Our programme each term also includes some class-based assemblies, special services in church linked to Christian festivals, and opportunities to share class topics. Every Friday is a whole-school celebration assembly (held in the church) in which staff and children share achievements. 

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from RE and Collective Worship. This should be expressed in writing to the headteacher.
