Welcome to Class 3 - Rievaulx

Rievaulx News - Spring 2

Welcome back!

I hope everyone has had a good half term break and is ready for the busy six weeks ahead.

Firstly, I would like to welcome Mr Houghton to Sessay School. The children have already met him and are very happy that he will be teaching on a Tuesday afternoon!

He will be covering my PPA time and will be teaching either science or computing.

It will be ‘Earth and Space’ this half term.

We will be finishing off our Topic on Ancient Greece and moving onto a ‘Trip round Europe’   - visiting a different country each week!

Literacy will cover letter writing, stories with flashbacks and ongoing comprehension, grammar and spelling work.

January 2017 - Rievaulx News

We have started doing a short exercise routine at the beginning of each day   ‘Wake up, Shake up!’ is great fun and proving very popular with the children!

This week, Mr Mason has challenged us to add in two more exercises to make the workout more challenging!

“It gets me going on a morning and it is getting much easier!”  (Y6 child)

Everyone has been extremely busy writing their own Greek Myths. The children have worked really hard to produce some high quality writing – I am really looking forward to reading them!

We have also been designing and painting Greek vases and making masks – ready for some tragedy or comedy!

On Wednesday 1st February, we are having the first of our Maths mornings in school – parents will be able to see lessons on ‘addition’ in each class and see the progression as they move throughout school – do come and join us!

2017 - Welcome back and Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone has had a lovely Christmas and New Year and is ready for the busy term ahead.

Our history topic this half term is ‘Groovy Greeks’ – the children seem very enthusiastic about it already! There will be plenty of artwork, DT and the children will be planning and writing their own myths.

In Science, the children will be learning about ‘Forces’ – taught by Mrs Brigginshaw on a Tuesday afternoon.

R.E. will cover the work of the charity Christian Aid.

Mr Mason will continue to work with us on alternate Monday mornings – w/b 16th January 2017.

Simon Carson Sports will also commence that week but it will be indoor activities this half term; aspects from their ‘Game of life’ programme.

We have survived the half term!

Autumn 2

We’ve had a really busy first half term and the children have settled into the class very well, it’s been lovely to see them working and socialising together.

We have been VERY lucky with the weather so we have had lots of outside P.E. - finishing off with the Cross Country at Thirsk and the Tag rugby tournament at Queen Ethelburga’s.

The children have produced some fantastic work around the Titanic topic, they should feel very proud of themselves!

After half term, our new topic will be ‘Islands’.

The children have already given some thought to the areas they are interested in… apologies in advance, Modroc islands are proving a popular choice!

The islands will be made in school but please could you start collecting ‘crafty’ bits over the holidays?

Next half term, we are launching our whole – school ‘push’ on mental maths and multiplication tables.

The children have probably told you how important they are… they come into all areas of maths. We will continue to focus on them in class but any practise at home will help the children enormously.

Mathletics, (they all have a password stuck into their planner) ipad games or simply reciting them – the latter worked for me!!

I have been trialling the individual reading this half term, the feedback from the children is very positive, it is great to see them enjoying the chance to read books of their own choice. Alongside this, they are also doing comprehension work; this checks their understanding of when reading.

The arithmetic tests will now be part of the Year 5 and 6 homework each week. Very soon, the children will see a pattern in the types of questions being asked. eg: Multiplying by 1, the answer doesn’t change. Multiplying by zero, the answer is always zero.

The more the children can familiarise themselves with the tests, the easier they will become.

Mr Mason will continue to work with us on a Monday morning and the Simon Carson sports coach will be doing hockey with us on a Thursday afternoon. Please make sure the children have their P.E. kits in school all week.

The last swimming session for the Year 5’s is Friday 9th December.

Other dates for your diary…

31/10/16 – Rev. Kathy Heathcote collective worship

 8/11/16  – Y5/6 football tournament at Thirsk School (9.30 -12noon)

2/12/16 – Christmas Fair 3 – 5pm

Have a lovely half term holiday!

Autumn 2016 - Welcome to  new term!

Welcome back to the new school year, I hope everyone has had a super holiday and is ready for learning again.

It’s going to be a busy and fun packed half term in Rievaulx so here are just a few things to tell you about…

We are very fortunate to have Mr Mason back in school again this year. He will be with us on a Monday morning 9 – 10am so it is VERY important that everyone arrives at school on time (8.45am) quick change and ready to go!  If the weather isn’t good, we will be doing some science activities related to ’Animals, including humans’ (pulse experiments, healthy lifestyles etc)

On a Thursday afternoon 1-2 pm, we will have another P.E. session with a coach from Simon Carson Sports; please can children have their P.E. kit in school all week and take it home to wash on a weekend.

Homework will be given out on a FRIDAY and collected in the following THURSDAY.

This term the Year 5’s will go swimming on a Friday morning with the Y3/4 children from Fountains. This will allow me to do some valuable, targeted teaching with the Year 6 children.

Mrs Spence will continue to work every morning as well as Thursday afternoon in class.

My planning and preparation time (PPA) will be on a Tuesday afternoon. During this time, Ms Rolph will teach science to the class.

Our topic to start off the year is’ The Titanic’.

If you have any books or relevant information, please feel free to bring them in. This topic lends itself to lots of literacy work – newspaper writing, diary extracts; art activities, group investigative work and individual research – I’m sure the children will enjoy it!

I hope all the children will work hard and be very happy in Rievaulx. If you have any questions please feel free to come and see me.

Kind Regards, Mrs Sowray.

An exciting, but short half term – Time has flown by!

Spring second half

‘Chinese Whispers’

In history, we have been learning about the Ancient Shang Dynasty. This year, Chinese New Year was on 8th February so on the Monday we had a Chinese Banquet – the children prepared the food with Mrs Spence.  Noodles, rice, sweet & sour chicken, spring rolls were just a few of the delights sampled by the children; even those using chopsticks cleared their bowls!! (see short video)

Chinese lanterns and painted teapot designs decorate the classroom entrance – the children have all said how colourful and eye catching they look.

Mr Mason continues to come in on a Tuesday morning- he has been doing basketball and this half term we are moving onto football. We have a Year 5/6 tournament at Queen Ethelburga’s next Wednesday afternoon, 2 – 4pm.

This half term, we are also very fortunate to have Mr Mark Jobling coming into to do cricket coaching on a Thursday afternoon. We had our first session this week – great fun! (particularly the ‘Diamond Cricket’.)

Mrs Sue Thorne comes into Rievaulx every Thursday morning – sometimes she works alongside us in Literacy; other times she asks us to help her out!

Last half term, she led two Key Stage 2 Collective Worship’s on the theme of ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Rievaulx children have looked at the prayer written in different languages and over the last few weeks, we have been creating our own ‘wordles’ based on the Lord’s Prayer – look out for a display in the school office coming shortly!

During Collective Worship this term, we have been focusing on the different ‘British Values’, what they mean and how we promote them in and around school. The children have been very knowledgeable and have enjoyed exploring each value.

We finished the half term with two British Values days and had a visit from two community police officers who talked about the ‘Rule of the law’.

In class, we focussed on Respect and Tolerance – how we are all different, yet we all fit together.

A colourful, whole school display has gone up in the school hall.

Now we are all getting very excited about East Barnby … only 2 weeks to go!!
