Welcome to Class 1 - Byland

Welcome back to school. We hope you have had a lovely Easter break!

Our topic this term is North, East, South, West. We will be learning the names of capital cities in the UK and locating these on a map, and we will look at the similarities and differences between a UK and a non-European capital city. We will then move on to learning about compass points and using these in field work activities.

Our science topic is Humans. We will be identifying and naming the basic parts of the human body and learning about which part of the body is associated with each sense. We will also be talking about what our bodies need to keep them fit and healthy. The children will be carrying out some interesting investigations and will collect and analyse data to assist them with this.

In Literacy, we will be having some fun with superheroes!  The children will be writing stories featuring their very own superhero characters.  We will then be looking at stories by the same author and comprehension activities. The Reception children will join in with our literacy work with a focus on writing sentences.  They will continue with their phonics programme, learning consonant blends such as ‘st’ and ‘bl’, and they will be bringing home more tricky words to learn.  Please continue to read/practise sounds with your child as much as possible.

In Maths we will be starting the term learning about money; we will be looking at the different coins and notes and then using these to buy items and give change. We will then move onto number work looking at place value, addition and subtraction, and missing number problems. The children will use a variety of mathematical resources to support them in their work. Please keep practising your child’s SMIRF’S and completing Mathletics; these are very important mental recall activities. Please let us know if you have trouble printing certificates and we can do this for you. We will share Mathletics certificates during assembly in church on a Friday!

Our PE lessons will now be on a Thursday afternoon. The children will be taking part in multi- sports activities and the sessions will be led by a coach from the Simon Carson sports school. The sessions will be outside and the children will need a full outdoor PE kit. Please note that these sessions will finish at 3pm and the children will therefore be sent home in their PE kits with their school uniform in their PE bags. Please ensure that all uniform is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

In RE we will be looking at ‘Celebrations’; the children will learn about celebrations in their own lives such as birthdays, weddings and baptisms, and they will also look at celebrations from a different religion.

The children are now becoming much more independent with their early morning jobs and routines. Thank you for your continued support with this by not coming into the classroom on a morning with your child. However, as always, if you wish to chat to us about anything at any time please feel free to come in and see us.

To make all parents aware, our reading pattern has changed slightly. All children are now guided reading once a week and reading individually 1-1 once a week. If your child needs their book changing on a Friday that’s fine we will be encouraging them to get them out on a morning so we can get them changed over the day. We may start to send handwriting sheets or mental arithmetic sheets home to practise from time to time to support what we are working on at school. Please help your children with these.

During this term we ask you to not come into the classroom on a morning; your children need to do their jobs independently now and we will be awarding merits to help promote independence. However, if you wish to chat to us about anything at any time please feel free to come in and see us.
