Welcome to Class 1 - Byland

Welcome back to school.

If you are a perspective parent and you would like to see our wonderful school in action please come to visit, either by booking an appointment or we are having an open afternoon on Friday 13th October 2017!

We hope you have had a lovely Summer break!

A very warm welcome to all our new pupils and parents to Sessay Primary School; we are very much looking forward to working with you.

Our main initial topic is Ourselves where we will focus on getting to know each other. Then we will move onto our main topic which is A Treasure Chest of Toys. We will look at contemporary toys and study toys parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents may have played with. We will look at similarities and differences and identify changes in materials and technology.

In Science we will be looking at Everyday Materials such as wood, plastic, glass, metal and rock. We will be observing, comparing and sorting these different materials based on their physical properties, and we will be thinking about why certain materials are used for particular purposes.

In Literacy we will be focusing on our phonics work.

The Year 1 children will start with a thorough re-cap of phase 3 and phase 4 sounds and tricky words, before moving onto phase 5; this phase sees the introduction of the alternative ways of writing (graphemes)  the sounds already learnt. For example the sound ee can be written as ea as in meat, ie as in thief and with a letter in the middle as in theme. The children will be learning how to correctly form and punctuate sentences within these sessions.

Reception children will take part in lots of phonics sessions tuning them into sounds around them before learning ‘sounds’ and learning to read. We will be continuing with our cursive script, each letter is to start on the line, please support us with this at home the best you can.

Maths will start with lots of number recognition and ordering before moving onto addition and subtraction later in the half term. Please use Mathletics to support your child with their mental/oral skills, print off certificates to share in assembly on a Friday and awards will be given to the Mathlete of the week. Mathletics passwords will be given to all children again this week, please use this fantastic resource it is a vital part of your child’s Maths skills!

Our PE lessons will be on a Thursday afternoon. The children will be taking part in multi- sports activities and the sessions will be led by a coach from the Simon Carson sports school. Whilst we anticipate that the majority of these sessions will be outdoor, please ensure sure your child has both an indoor and outdoor PE kit in school, as some sessions may be indoors depending on the weather.

Please note that these sessions will finish at 3pm and the children will therefore be sent home in their PE kits with their school uniform in their PE bags. Please ensure that all uniform is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Homework

Reception children will bring their Learning Journeys home on a Friday – please add photographs and any drawings the children do over the weekend ready for them to talk about on a Monday morning. Sounds and reading books will follow.

Yr1 – In addition to reading at home, the children will receive weekly spellings to learn each Friday which will be tested the following Friday. They will also (when they are ready) get a book review to complete after each story book.

All children in Reception will be read with 1-1 twice per week and Yr 1 once per week; they will also do guided reading in Yr 1 and Reception will join in later in the year. Children will all have their books changed twice per week if they have been read with at home and a book review has been completed (Yr1). Please write in your child’s comment book so we know if you have read or not. We will be expecting Yr1 to be more independent and get their reading folders out on a Friday and change their book themselves.

From time to time handwriting practice sheets and mental arithmetic questions may be also sent home.

As always if there is anything you wish to discuss we are always available, please pop in!

Mrs Tyrka and Mrs Bennison

To make all parents aware, our reading pattern has changed slightly. All children are now guided reading once a week and reading individually 1-1 once a week. If your child needs their book changing on a Friday that’s fine we will be encouraging them to get them out on a morning so we can get them changed over the day. We may start to send handwriting sheets or mental arithmetic sheets home to practise from time to time to support what we are working on at school. Please help your children with these.

During this term we ask you to not come into the classroom on a morning; your children need to do their jobs independently now and we will be awarding merits to help promote independence. However, if you wish to chat to us about anything at any time please feel free to come in and see us.
