Our Topic is Our Wonderful World of Animals.

As part of this exciting topic, we will be looking at the life and work of James Herriot and we will be learning about farming in the past.

In Maths we will be working on addition and subtraction using a variety of resources and methods. We will be thinking about how we can apply our knowledge to solve problems. We will then move onto place value work and we will continue to develop our mental maths skills with Big Maths and mental arithmetic sessions using Mathletics.

In English we will be focusing on story telling. We will be looking at the structure of stories and thinking about adjectives to describe the different characters. The children will then plan and write their own stories. The Reception children will continue with their phonics work, learning lots of new sounds made up of two letters (digraphs) such as ai, ee and oi. These will be added to the children’s sounds books for practise at home.

Our Science topic is Animals including Humans. We will begin by learning about body parts and senses and then we will move onto classifying animals using a range of different criteria.

In RE we will be thinking about questions which puzzle us; the children will have the opportunity to think of their own ‘mystery’ or puzzling questions and share their own beliefs and ideas in simple ways. They will learn that some of their questions have no certain answers and people may have different answers and beliefs to them.

Forest School

This term the children will be taking part in Forest School sessions on Monday afternoons, commencing on Monday 21st January, with Mr Houghton. The sessions will be held in all weathers on the school field, so please ensure that your child has suitable warm outdoor clothing including wellington boots as it is likely to be muddy. (We will provide waterproofs).

Please can all children have a pair of wellies and a coat in school at all times; unfortunately we cannot allow children on the grass or in the mud kitchen in our

outdoor area this time of year without wellies - it’s very muddy!

Reception children will bring their Learning Journeys home on a Friday – please add photographs and any drawings the children do over the weekend ready for them to talk about on a Monday morning. Sounds and reading books will come in due course after our 'Early Literacy Evening' which we will host on the 3rd week in September (date TBC) please check your child's bag each day.

Yr1 – In addition to reading at home, the children will receive weekly spellings each Friday which will be tested the following Friday. They will also (when they are ready) get a book review to complete after each story book. In the mean time there is a section in their reading record to draw pictures of their favourite book that week. Year 1 will have a 'Weekend Diary' sent home on a Friday this is for them to add pictures or any news/achievements to share on a Monday, please note these are not like Reception Learning journeys and we will not contribute to them at school.

All children in Reception will be read with 1-1 twice per week and Yr 1 once per week; they will also do guided reading in Yr 1.

Children will all have their books changed once a week by a member of staff after they have been read with (if it has been practised at home) if you would like your child's books changing more regularly than this there will be an opportunity for them to do so on a morning but it is up to them to do this and then let a member of staff know. If you would like to help your child initially please feel free to come in and do so, but hopefully Year 1 will soon become independent in doing this!

From time to time handwriting practice sheets and mental arithmetic questions may be also sent home.

During this term we are happy for you to come into the cloakroom on a morning to help settle your child however we will be awarding merits to help promote independence to those children who do their morning jobs independently.

If you wish to chat to us about anything at any time please feel free to come in and see us and we will organise a convenient time. :-)

In Byland Class we love to learn through play and exploration, the children always have the opportunity to lead their own learning especially in Reception and into Yr 1.

Learning is Fun and happiness is Key!
