Our School Values

Growing together in love and learning:

Welcome to Class 1 - Byland

We Welcome back to school. We hope you have had a lovely half term holiday.

If you are a perspective parent and you would like to see our wonderful school in action please come to visit, either by booking an appointment or we are having an open afternoon on Friday 13th October 2017!

Our topic this term is Our Wonderful World and Christmas! As part of this exciting topic, we will be looking at the UK, the four countries and capital cities. The childrens interests will lead us in the direction that they want to go but we will maybe link Christmas and look at a contrasting environment maybe the North and South Pole. This will link with some work on ‘St Nicholas’ with him being a famous person for the children to learn about.

We will be studying the different animal categories in science and we will be learning about which animals are herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We will be encouraging the wildlife into our outdoor area by making bird feeders and bug hotels! Fingers crossed they will come and visit us!

In Literacy and Phonics initially we will be focusing on Bonfire Night poetry and doing some writing around Guy Fawkes. With Reception we will continue with our phonics work, learning lots of new single sounds then moving onto sounds which are made up of two letters (digraphs) such as ‘ai’, ‘ee’ and ‘oi’. These will be added to the children’s sound books for practise at home. Please ensure you read/practise sounds with your child as much as possible at home. Every little helps!

In Maths we will be working on subtraction to start with using a variety of resources to support us before moving on to shape. Please keep practising your child’s mental arithmetic by completing Mathletics this is very important and will support your child’s mental recall, please let us know if you have trouble printing certificates and we can do this for you.

We will be learning attacking and defending skills then moving onto agility, balance and coordination in PE, it will be on a Thursday afternoon with our coaches from Simon Carson. Please ensure that the children have both an indoor and outdoor PE kit in school at all times as this may change.

In RE we will be looking at ‘Creation and Thanksgiving’ and ‘Christmas’, the children will learn about the creation story and act out the Christmas story.

Please can all children have a pair of wellies and a coat in school at all times, unfortunately we cannot allow children on the grass or in the mud kitchen at this time of year without wellies- it’s very muddy!

During this term we will be promoting independence in the classroom, please try to encourage your child to come into the classroom independently and do their own book bags and coats.

As always, if there is anything you wish to discuss about your child then please feel free to call in and speak to a member of the Byland team.

Mrs Bennison and Mrs Tyrka :-)

Reception children will bring their Learning Journeys home on a Friday – please add photographs and any drawings the children do over the weekend ready for them to talk about on a Monday morning. Sounds and reading books are now starting to come please check your child's bag each day.

Yr1 – In addition to reading at home, the children will receive weekly spellings to learn each Friday which will be tested the following Friday. They will also (when they are ready) get a book review to complete after each story book.

All children in Reception will be read with 1-1 twice per week and Yr 1 once per week; they will also do guided reading in Yr 1, some Reception have now started this too, others will follow later in the year. Children will all have their books changed twice per week if they have been read with at home and a book review has been completed (Yr1). Please write in your child’s comment book so we know if you have read or not. We will be expecting Yr1 to be more independent and get their reading folders out on a Friday and change their book themselves.

From time to time handwriting practice sheets and mental arithmetic questions may be also sent home.

During this term we ask you to not come into the classroom on a morning; your children need to do their jobs independently now and we will be awarding merits to help promote independence. However, if you wish to chat to us about anything at any time please feel free to come in and see us.
